Back 2 Bahia wanders through 300 years of Afro-Brazilian rhythms with the same freedom with which its creator switches from one percussion instrument to another. In his first solo CD, Bolão, a veteran session musician from Bahia, brings a new focus to these ancient rhythms, toying with electronic beats and boldly applying jazzy arrangements to an axé pop beat, but without ever crossing that line into the commercial mainstream. Bolão's music is steeped in the many traditional Brazilian rhythms from samba to capoeira, but his maturity as a musician allows us a taste of a more sophisticated, polyrhythmic sound. Echoes of Arabic music "so ingrained in the Northeast interior" appear here and there, as does Cuban music, a little chorinho or African pop, constantly reminding us of the healthy cross-pollination that is the eternal source of so much Brazilian music... Helped by the production and keyboards of Tuca Camargo, Maurício Tagliari's guitars and cavaquinhos, and Luca Raele's clarinet and sax, the result is an eclectic, original and cool mix of post-millennium grooves.
